It is really a privilege to be able to live and work in beautiful Plettenberg bay.
Plett Optical was born as the brain child of Jan le Roux after acquiring Slabber and Slabbert Optometrists in August 2008.
Conrad van Tonder had acquired Muir Optometrists in 2011 and rebranded to IC Optometrists. He opened IC Sunglasses at Market Square one year later, one of the biggest independent sunglasses stores South Africa had seen up to that point.
Jan and Conrad became friends and talks of amalgamation started. They could only see benefits for their clients by working together and the merger happened in 2014 when IC Optometrists gave up its premises in Melville’s corner. In 2015 IC Sunglasses vacated from Market Square and they all came together under one roof at Plett Optical in the Main Street of Plettenberg Bay.
Plett Optical have the widest range of quality branded spectacle frames, as well as a first world biggest ranges sunglass boutique. Plett Optical can now proudly offer an incredible range of designer frames, an independent sunglass boutique , of which many are scriptable with unique prescriptions in standard or polarizing lenses, increased admin space and storage area, a separate lens ordering and dispensing area, two refraction rooms and a high-tech lens cutting laboratory where some spectacles can be manufactured in less than an hour, even while you wait and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Jan identified a need in the community for quality, affordable spectacles. The merger gave Plett Optical a loud voice when dealing with suppliers and this led to further expansion and Budget Optix opened its doors in 2015. By collaborating with frame and lens manufacturers Budget Optix can now offer package deals to the community at a very affordable price.
Being so far from the lens manufacturing laboratories, they decided to become Hoya lens specialists, and installed the most powerful lens designing and ordering system. Plett Optical are Japanese Hoya lens specialists and has the strongest in-house lens ordering computer system available, which means that the best, thinnest, lightest and most appropriate Best Vision Lenses for their clients can be ordered.
After a client is examined, a frame is chosen that not only looks good, but that will also be able to take their prescription. The lenses are designed, and the powers materials and coatings are formulated. The lenses are then ordered and manufactured to the customer’s unique specifications. On receipt of the finished lenses, Plett Optical confirms that everything is 100% prior to fitting the frame properly to ensure comfortable vision.
After extensive research, they have developed a great interest in nutrition and diet, particularly in the micro nutrients required to maintain optimum eye health. Plett Optical are truly passionate about working with eyes as they believe that eyes are the window into the health of the body in general. They take a holistic approach to eyes, vison and systematic health.

Jan Le Roux
Optometrist
I was born in Beaufort West in the Great Karoo and was two weeks old when I first came to Plettenberg Bay and from then on spent many wonderful holidays in Plett. After I finished school in Cape town I qualified as an Optometrist at Wits in Johannesburg.
My passion is Optometry with all its facets along with a special interest is nutrition and general health.
In 2008 that I moved to Keurboom Stand and opened Plett Optical. I acquired Slabber and Slabber Optometrists and subsequently managed to move to larger and more visible premises in Main Street. I leased more space a year later and I were able to do what I envisaged.
I had space to display a bigger variety of branded and non-branded frames, a full-blown high-quality sunglass boutique, a second refraction room, a separate lens ordering and dispensing area, increased admin space and storage area, high tech lens cutting laboratory, and finally a totally separate business, Budget Optix to service a less advantaged community.
Conrad van Tonder was then the director of IC Optometrists and being a colleague, we became friends. We discussed our Optometric visions and needs and finding the same visage and goals we decided to merge in 2014 and became proud Optometrists of Plett Optical.
I am a family man with four daughters and 4 grandchildren. And three dogs. I enjoy spending my free time kayaking, cycling and anything to do with nature.
Conrad van Tonder
Optometrist
I was born and bred in a small town, Steytlerville, in the beautiful Karoo.
After completing my high school career as a boarder at Brandwag, Uitenhage, I became somewhat of a nomad travelling around the British Isles and then I came back to South Africa where I studied towards my Optical Dispensing degree in Cape town, completing my in-service training in Hermanus.
Whilst dispensing frames and sunglasses, which I found interesting and enjoyable, I discovered my passion for Optometry.
I then moved to Johannesburg where I completed my Optometric degree and gained valuable experience working alongside some of South Africa’s leading experts in Optometry, focusing specifically on general optometry and specialised contact lenses.
When the opportunity to move to Plett was offered to me it was an opportunity too good to refuse and I now get to do what I love doing professionally in this gorgeous coastal town and can truly call this my home.
I try to enjoy all that Plett has to offer by spending time on the waters of the Poortjies lagoon and cycling in our beautiful forest along the coastal cliffs.
My other great passion in life is my two Border Collies with whom I do agility and the thee of us do competing in shows a far afield as Bloemfontein and Cape Town.
